Geri, that is an Anna's hummingbird. Their territory used to extend only to central California but in the 1930s they started moving north as people started planting eucalyptus trees and started putting out hummingbird feeders. So, they extended their habitation range to Northern California, Oregon, Washington state and now Canada. Anna's hummingbirds are very adaptable. They eat the most insects out of any hummingbird species and will even forage off of pine sap in a pinch. They are now year round in Southwestern BC. There are also 3 other hummingbird species that migrate up here every Spring but they leave around the end of July. They also go into a kind of torpor or hibernation at night to conserve energy so they can handle cold a lot better than other species. We only have the ruby neck hummers … and its the males that fight over the feeder … but they let the females drink. No fair! We get the Anna's year round in the Vancouver area. The three migratory species we see around here in the spring to summer are the Black Chinned Hummingbird, the Rufous Hummingbird and the Calliope Hummingbirds. There are migratory Ruby throated Humminbirds in Eastern British Columbia but we don't see them on the coast. Definitely spoiled with variety in the summer. Lots of hummingbirds then and you'll see 4-5 bird or more battle royales. I even see them chase much bigger song birds away. The Anna's sing but they have a raspy, gravely voice. They are beautiful and incredibly acrobatic but they don't have a beautiful song. I think God is trying to say that you can't have everything. (At least on this earth) 😉 Can't wait for eternity.
