@arthur I was at the south-western flank of Mt. St. Helens on the day that it erupted. My cousin and I were on the upper stretches of the Kalama River (in an area we weren't supposed to be) that morning. We were up close and personal - the roar of the eruption was unbelievable - and we could see rocks the size of houses flying out of the mouth of the volcano - as well as lightening in the ash cloud. Fortunately it blew north - otherwise that would have been our last fishing trip - ever. Wow! Must have been an amazing sight! Our family drove through Washington State that summer and I remember seeing a lot of ash in places. I have been there a few times to see the remainder of the mountain. A very beautiful area, that's for sure.
