On Friday’s “CBS Evening News,” CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reported that the U.S. military “was perplexed by the degree to which” the Biden administration “telegraphed these strikes” in response to the fatal drone attack on U.S. soldiers, because the telegraphing “gave the militia leaders and Iranian operatives in Iraq and Syria time to either get out of the country or go to ground by surrounding themselves with women and children.” Only a “miracle” can reverse the problem, the renowned economist believes. The burgeoning US debt pile is akin to a “death spiral” that only a “miracle” could extract the country from, economist and 'Black Swan' author Nassim Taleb said at a business event on Monday, as quoted by Bloomberg. Taleb defined the expanding US debt load as a “white swan,” meaning a risk event that is highly predictable and more probable than a “black swan” event, a metaphor describing an occurrence that comes as a complete surprise. “So long as you have Congress keep extending the debt limit and doing deals because they’re afraid of the consequences of doing the right thing, that’s the political structure of the political system, eventually you’re going to have a debt spiral,” Taleb said. “And a debt spiral is like a death spiral.” Earlier this week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the absolute level of US public debt looks like “a scary number.” US government federal debt topped $34 trillion for the first time in history at the end of December. It now amounts to about $102,000 for an average American family of three. In 2023 alone, it grew by more than $4 trillion. According to Taleb, a former trader who is best known for publishing several bestselling books on economics, white swans include both the US deficit and the American economy that has grown more vulnerable to shocks than in previous years. He called such vulnerability a feature of globalization, as problems in one region can ricochet around the world. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the bill would create a "separate but unequal" system of justice for immigrants. The Senate’s draft border bill that promised to reduce migration chaos at the border actually invites a greater inflow by welcoming migrants who seek jobs or claim asylum. “I’ve seen enough,” said a Sunday evening tweet from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), adding: This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, “the border never closes.” . . . the bill supercharges the asylum system, giving many more people from around the world both the incentives and means to migrate into the United States. The huge inflow would hammer Americans’ living standards. . . . The bill’s asylum section creates a new asylum process that will be run by pro-migration staffers who will be eager to use their unreviewed power to award work permits, asylum, and fast-track citizenship to grateful migrants who offer “clear and convincing” stories of oppression and suffering. The bill also raises the incentive and means for foreign graduates to take more white-collar jobs throughout the United States. Fortune 500 companies already keep a population of roughly 1.5 million foreign graduates in U.S. jobs, partly because the federal government already allows the companies to pay those foreign workers with dangled offers of green cards and citizenship.
