This is one of my favorite songs, not just at Christmas time, but all times. Praise His Holy Name! Singing this song chokes me up every time.

As a musician I understand embellishments and I understand making a song one's own but there are certain songs that rise above any one's ownership and should be sung as they were written. Countless artists have failed miserably to honor this song as written. Celine, Maria, Whitney, etc feel the need to embellish it and take the focus off of our Savior and put it on themselves. As Arthur so accurately and humorously described it, and I quote " “Joy to the worldohhhhh eeee uuuuu waaaaa, the Lord is come oooohhhh eeeeee uuuu uhhhhhh wah wah wahhhhhh…” *Ugh*   " EXACTLY!

When I was a kid my grandmother and my mother, both of whom had fantastic voices, would harmonize this and it always sent chills through me! The very last time they sang it I had a multitrack recorder in the room and forgot to record it and so now it is lost to the pages of history. I've never heard anyone sing it like they did.

Carry Underwood does a pretty good job of it and she is a Christian so I do like to hear her sing it.

O Holy Night!
The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;
Fall on your knees,
Oh, hear the angels voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night,
O night divine!

V2
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand;
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our Friend;
He knows our need,
To our weakness is no stranger.
Behold your King, before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King, before Him lowly bend!

V3
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace;
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name;
Christ is the Lord,
Oh, praise His name forever!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!

Oh I know what you mean Yohanan, chokes me up too. It's that last verse

I played it on piano all my life and I'd sing as I played. I would do fine until the last verse and the lines,

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name;
Christ is the Lord...

never could get past those.

Susan, that's the same verse that chokes me up. Sometimes I cannot even sing it. Just imagine what it will be like to praise His holy Name forever!

I think I know why we are overcome at this point in this song. We are no longer singing of His birth as the Christ child but here in the last verse Jesus broke those chains that had us doomed and  defeated sin and death and we are singing of Him as our Savior, our Lord and King!!! :yahoo:

Spot on, Susan! I am definitely consumed in His Glory when I am singing that and no longer thinking of the child king's birth.

O Holy Night is probably my favourite song, not just Christmas carol, too.

The lyrics are amazing and I literally feel tingles when I hear it. Well, the "proper" versions, that is.

Eternal life came into the world when Christ was born!  Holy!

Etertnal life comes again when we leave this world!   Holy!

And Holy when Christ returns to crush all evil!
