Ethel Kennedy, human rights advocate and widow of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, died on Thursday after suffering a stroke last week and being hospitalized. She was 96. Her death was announced by her grandson Joe Kennedy III in a post on X. “It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week. Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly,” said the former Massachusetts Congressman. ... Airplane manufacturer Boeing is preparing to significantly slash its workforce amid a strike and the company’s aircraft safety issues. The company is planning to cut ten percent of its workforce — approximately 17,000 people, CNBC reported on Friday. The move comes “as the company’s losses mount and a machinist strike that has idled its aircraft factories enters its fifth week,” the article notes, adding Boeing is also delaying the launch of its 777X wide-body plane until 2026. CEO Kelly Ortberg is more than two months into his tenure and has been tasked with helping the company regain stability following significant issues with safety and manufacturing. One example of a safety issue was when a Boeing plane carrying 174 passengers lost a wheel in midair after taking off from Los Angeles International Airport in July, according to Breitbart News, noting that it was the second such incident this year. Another incident happened in May when a Boeing plane made an emergency landing in Indonesia due to an engine fire. There were 468 passengers on board the jet, per Breitbart News. California officials are actively blocking Elon Musk’s SpaceX from launching rockets in the state because of his support for Donald Trump. According to The Los Angeles Times, members of the California Coastal Commission, a state agency controlled by Governor Gavin Newsom, made no secret of the fact that their decision was based on Musk’s support for Trump and the Republican Party’s platform. The commission’s decision is also likely a retaliation for Musk’s decision to pull most of the company’s operations out of California. Back in July, Musk said that the passage of a California law preventing from making rules requiring parental notification if a child identifies as transgender was the “final straw,” and he would be moving the company out of the state. Spanish researchers have claimed that DNA and other analyses indicate that Christopher Columbus likely came from a Jewish family in Spain. The 15th-century man credited with the discovery of the Americas has been traditionally recognised as an Italian who hailed from the Republic of Genoa and who sailed under a Spanish flag... The DNA also showed a “western Mediterranean” origin, yet it was not conclusive as to which Mediterranean country the Columbus family came from. Yet the findings, published in a primetime documentary in Spain on Saturday to coincide with the country’s national day, claimed that Columbus was almost certainly not originally from Italy. In addition to the DNA evidence, Prof Lorente Acosta pointed to an analysis of around 40 letters signed by the explorer, which the researchers claimed showed no signs of influence by the Italian language. The team highlighted letters written to a bank in Genoa by Columbus which were still written in Castilian Spanish rather than Italian. Spanish historian Francesc Albardaner, who has long argued that Columbus came from the Catalan region of eastern Spain, said that his research points to the explorer coming from a family of Jewish silk spinners from the Valencia region of Spain. “Jews could only spend three days at a time in Genoa by law at that time,” Mr Albardaner noted. Albardaner argued that Columbus likely chose to obscure his heritage and faith to avoid religious persecution against Jews common in Europe at the time, including during the Spanish Inquisition. The era saw the forced conversion of Jews to Christianity and an order of expulsion of those who refused to convert in 1492, the same year Columbus set sail from Spain... There have long been suggestions that Columbus was Jewish. Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Pennsylvania State University Tobias Brinkmann has noted that traditionally Jewish given names, such as Abraham and Jacob, were common among members of his maternal line. Columbus is also said to have selected many Jews as well as those who were forced to convert to Christianity, known as “conversos”, to staff his crew as astrologers, navigators, and translators. Others have even speculated that the true purpose of his explorations may have been motivated by a desire to find a new land for Jewish people to settle in free from persecution. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky accused North Korea on Sunday of sending troops to Russia’s army and once again appealed for more support to prevent “a bigger war”. Zelensky’s comments came days after visiting several European capitals to press his case for more military and financial help in the war against invading Russian forces. “We see an increasing alliance between Russia and regimes like in North Korea,” Zelensky said in his evening address. “It is no longer just about transferring weapons.
