Disillusion at the inaction by the Canadian government is also reportedly growing among the First Nations communities most directly affected by the fires, including some that have burned to the ground entirely and found little to no support from Ottawa. In the past decade, as the Canadian government has largely abandoned forest management as a national policy, these fires have grown larger, more dangerous, and more polluting. The Canadian government has no federal emergency response agency and no national fire authority, leaving the country’s provinces on their own to respond to the fires. Violent threats and security incidents aimed at AI companies and their leadership have surged dramatically in recent months, prompting major investments in executive protection and armed security. The Wall Street Journal reports that the AI industry is facing an unprecedented wave of violent threats and security incidents as public opposition to the technology intensifies. According to data from security firm Liferaft, digital threats targeting AI executives and data centers increased sevenfold between late February and May, marking a sharp escalation in hostility towards tech companies and their leaders. The surge in threats has prompted significant changes in how AI companies approach security. Tech executives who once moved freely in public are now traveling with armed guards. Some industry leaders have begun downplaying their involvement with AI to avoid attracting attention. Companies are also advising employees to hide corporate logos when in unfamiliar areas due to the risk of targeted attacks. A 29-year-old Turkish migrant living in Germany refused to sit next to a woman on a flight because of Sharia law, then punched or slapped the female flight attendant who dared to confront him. According to BILD, the suspect was arrested after the June 1 flight landed in Düsseldorf. Police say witnesses told investigators the man refused to remain in his assigned seat because it was next to a woman, claiming his actions were based on Sharia law. When a female flight attendant approached him in an effort to defuse the situation, the passenger allegedly punched or slapped her in the face, according to police. Sharia law has zero legal standing in Germany. Yet this migrant felt entitled to impose it mid-flight and then attack a woman who wouldn’t accommodate his demands.

We must stand with them.” Each new page of the report paints a sobering yet hopeful picture of global religious freedom facing rapidly growing persecution. Among the most alarming trends: Yet amid the darkness, hope persists. Despite relentless repression, Christianity remains and is even expanding in surprising places like Iran and Asia. Believers are refusing to stay silent. In South Asia, militant Hindu groups are increasingly targeting Christians, while local governments in some regions have enacted anti-conversion laws that “criminalize basic religious expression.” In Myanmar, Buddhist nationalism is routinely invoked to justify razing entire Christian villages. In Turkey and certain communist regimes, “transnational repression” is employed using global intelligence networks to surveil, intimidate and even kidnap exiled critics and religious minorities. Communist agents, in particular, pressure foreign governments to repatriate asylum seekers and harass diaspora communities across Asia, Africa and the West. In parts of Africa, jihadists routinely massacre dozens of Christians at a time. Authoritarianism, meanwhile, crushes any hint of dissent. In Iran, “the morality police have returned to the streets, enforcing harsh religious codes with impunity” against those who deviate from the regime’s strict Islamist ideology. ICC noted that “while Christians in Western nations don’t experience the same horrific persecution that believers in other hot spots face, religious freedom in corners of the West is eroding.”
