It is very mild here in the winter (usually no lower than 28F) so the strawberries thrive here. They overwinter just fine. I remember picking wild strawberries when I lived in the far north as a child. (61 degrees N) Those were the sweetest strawberries I remember. They were very small but tasted amazing. On a side note, the jackfruit have been amazing this year. Tastes just like Juicy Fruit bubble gum. 😉 I went outside to check on my wild strawberries and they are all gone! 🙁 Some rodent or bird … enjoyed an early morning snack because they were still there at midnight when I put out the trash. Oh … well … at least I can say I enjoyed the pretty flowers. I reckon I will have to wait for the millennium kingdom to experience the taste of wild berries. B-) Geri9, you would need quite a few more than one plant to get a decent feast of strawberries. We live in Ontario, Canada, about an hour from Toronto, on a beef and pork farm also cropping about 1,000 acres. Back when our 4 sons were at home, I had an enormous garden to feed all those enormous hollow legs and it included of course a long row of strawberries. Ontario strawberries, (maybe because we are north of the States) though smaller than those of the States, are so much sweeter to those coming to us from the States. To be fair.....likely when you get them in the States locally and fresh without the travel time, they are better than what we get from the States in our stores. Since the boys are grown, I've given up that enormous garden and now just go, like everyone else, to the the 'pick your own' farms in the neighborhood but still make those mazing pies with the glaze and fresh berries. I often wonder while enjoying the wonderful summertime fruits, how can God improve on these delectable fruits in our heavenly home? Colors and music are supposedly more intense and brilliant than here....Maybe there will be some of the same fruits we enjoy here....hope at least there are strawberries and raspberries (also had a long patch of those back in the early days). Looking forward to having a younger body so that in the picking of them I don't end up with that aching back. Maybe we won't even have to bend down to pick them! oh....and about overwintering....cover them with straw in the fall and in the spring, gently push the straw aside from the new growth and the straw (that's why they're called strawberries!) helps to retain the moisture, keep the weeds down like mulch does in your flower bed, and the strawberries will not be covered in dirt! Update … I found the culprit who ate my wild strawberries. A big size rat in my flower garden! So I made use of that nasty Cherry Vanilla Coke soda by placing some in a disposable cup and he drank it all … so he will be a goner very soon since I read they can’t burp and pass the fizzy gas. Geri9, I'm just glad it was a rat and not Arthur! TR :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: Besides my guess is that Arthur knows how to burp! I however am not able to burp on command! TR Neither can seagulls! Never throw Aka-seltzer in the air on the beach. The sea-gulls will eat them and then they will die for the same reason the rat will. I hate rats, so I’m ok with this form of death, arsenic also works, just make sure you don’t have little kids or your pets around. :calvin TR - it is a learned art :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: Practice makes burpfeck :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr:
