So if you see the red plume of smoke — very suspicious!

ammonium nitrate is an oxidizer used as a fertilizer, when it is placed in the ground, harmless — it can intensify combustion and allows other substances to ignite more readily, but is not itself very combustible; typically calcium carbonate is added to ammonium nitrate to create calcium ammonium nitrate, which is safer for storage.
