Venezuela declares state of emergency after back-to-back earthquakes leave scores dead:

Venezuela's interim leader declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after two powerful earthquakes and more than 20 aftershocks struck the country, damaging infrastructure and forcing the closure of Caracas' main airport. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude quakes have killed around 188 people and injured nearly 1,500.

Buildings cracked and crumbled and residents fled into the streets after the quakes, which the United States Geological Survey measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, hit northern Venezuela within a minute of each other on Wednesday night.

...we are alive, but there are people suffering right now with family members trapped under the rubble or pinned down, unable to get them out," resident Yilsmaris Blanco told AFP.

Offers of support poured in from around the world...

The United States said Thursday it was mobilising $150 million in aid. The State Department said the package would include $50 million in new bilateral awards to aid groups already working in Venezuela, as well as a $100 million contribution to a UN humanitarian fund for the country.

Washington is closely involved in oil-rich Venezuela after US forces ousted and arrested president Nicolas Maduro in January.

Massive 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Philippines, Triggers Tsunami Warnings Across Pacific Region:

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines early Monday morning local time, unleashing severe shaking across General Santos City and nearby provinces, toppling parts of buildings, triggering tsunami warnings, and leaving at least one person dead with several others injured.

The quake hit at 7:37 a.m. Philippine Standard Time on Tuesday, with its epicenter located roughly 8 miles southwest of General Santos City off Sarangani province in the Soccsksargen region.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported the quake as magnitude 8.2 before later revising it downward to approximately 7.8.

Krasheninnikov volcano erupts for the first time in 600 years, linked to Kamchatka M8.8 earthquake, Russia:

The Krasheninnikov volcano erupted for the first time in 600 year on August 3, 2025, sending an ash plume 6 km (19 700 feet) into the sky. Scientists suggest that the eruption might have been linked to the M8.8 earthquake that struck the Kamchatka peninsula on July 30.

The Krasheninnikov volcano in Russia erupted for the first time in 600 years at 02:50 LT on August 3 (16:50 UTC on August 2), just days after a massive M8.8 earthquake struck the region, generating shockwaves and tsunamis worldwide.

“This is the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years,” said Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT).

...subsequent reports from the Kamchatka branch of Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) stated that the plume reached an altitude of 6 km (19,700 feet) a.s.l.

Strong M6.8 aftershock hits east of Severo-Kurilsk, near Kamchatka Peninsula:

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.8 struck east of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, at 05:37 UTC on August 3, 2025. The agency reports a depth of 35 km (22 miles), while the EMSC lists the same magnitude at a depth of 25 km (16 miles). This event is part of the ongoing aftershock sequence following the tsunami-generating M8.8 earthquake that occurred at 23:24 UTC on July 29.

This earthquake is part of a strong aftershock sequence following the M8.8 megathrust earthquake that struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula at 23:24 UTC on July 29, 2025. Since that mainshock, multiple significant aftershocks (M6+) have been recorded across the region, particularly east and southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk and south of Vilyuchinsk.

A total of 426 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above have been recorded along the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Kuril Islands region over the past 7 days.
