😂  this is priceless!   When  I used to stay a few days at my Italian Grandparent’s house a conversation like this would occur! 😆

My Nana would take me and my cousins to the Jersey Shore by bus line … the bus stop was 2 blocks from their house.  My grandfather preferred staying home so she would ask him what candy does he want cause I’m playing the wheels (aka they had concession stands on the boardwalk and you play to win prizes … large boxes filled with 24 regular size candy bars (no fun size back then). Or popular record albums, or t-shirts/sweatshirts, stuff animals, etc.   She was so confident she would win the boxes of candy and made him make a list of what kind he wanted.  Since he smoked (but had to smoke outside on the back or front porch) she also won a  large box of cigarettes with about 24 individual boxes inside.   Anytime she played the wheels … she won!  She would stand near each booth and observe how the ocean breeze  wind blew in … if you watched long enough you could figure out a pattern on the numbers, letters, symbols that the wheel needle landed on.  It would often be 3 spots … so then she gave me 3 quarters and told me where to place them and of course she was a winner!  She kept giving me the quarters and I kept placing them on those spots to win more boxes candy … then head to another candy booth and had to stand back and observe the wind once more. She carried shopping bags and filled them up quickly. :mdrmdr:   Then she wanted to play BINGO indoors where it was air conditioned.  They had small appliances on display.  You needed so many wins to collect - the lamps, hand mixer, blender, small black and white tv, radio, record player, etc.  And she would eventually cash in her winning tickets for those prizes too!  Meanwhile my cousins and I would be on the beach in the hot sun and then meet her for a late lunch and get pizza and head back on the bus since it was a 2 hr trip back.  She was a lot of fun to be around and shared all the goodies and gave out those  BINGO prices to everyone in the family.  Great memories.

This is what playing the wheels looks like …  I can’t imagine what it cost now and its probably only the fun size bars.

Cute.  My mom was playing bingo once and the place was "raided".  Nobody was in trouble, the police just wanted everybody to leave because it was a "bad neighborhood" and dangerous.  The ladies didn't realize that of course when they went there.

Oh wow … that was sweet of the police showing they cared for their welfare!

My Grandmother was a member with the senior citizen center in her city but my grandfather didn’t want to socialize with them.  She was always lonely when they took their day trip adventures.  They often took the bus to Atlantic City.  Everything was discounted for them - the bus tickets, the smorgasbord all you can eat at Merv Griffin resort.  They even gave the seniors $25.00 worth of quarters in a big bucket trying to entice them to gamble.  My grandmother wasn’t really a gambler.  She only played when she knew she had a chance to win 😆 but also knew when to stop.  She said she would observe people sitting at the slot machines … some were there a long time and nothing happened … so when they got up to leave she would quickly sit there and try the machine out because eventually the odds were higher you were bound to win and sure enough … not too long after … putting the 4th quarter in the slot … BAM … the bells rang and the quarters were coming out  and the person that was there earlier came over to complain no fair she was at that machine for over a half hour. :mdrmdr:    My grandmother really wanted to play BINGO but that area of the beach / boardwalk didn’t offer it.  She knew her limitations but sadly some of the older folks in the group were addicted and would gamble a lot of money away.

Perhaps in the next life we will be playing BINGO and other table games but using free golden nuggets or gem stones? 😉
