Egypt: Mummies Parade and Scorpions Strike

Patricia N. · 2021-11-21T17:17:18Z

"Egypt held a gala parade on Saturday celebrating the transport of 22 of its prized royal mummies from central Cairo to their new resting place in a massive new museum further south in the capital. . . . The mummies were being transported in climate-controlled cases loaded onto trucks decorated with wings and pharaonic design for the hour-long journey from their previous home in the older Egyptian Museum. The vehicles were designed to appear like the ancient boats used to carry deceased pharaohs to their tombs." “This parade is a unique global event that will not be repeated,” declared Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany. The “Pharaohs’ Golden Parade” circled Tahrir square, where authorities officially unveiled an obelisk and four sphinxes to decorate Cairo’s most famous square." Plagues Strike Egypt: Sudden Floods, Then 4-Inch Scorpions Called Deathstalkers "First came the lightning that strobe-lit the Nile skies a pale purply gray. What happened next checked all the boxes for a fierce storm: heavy rain, thunder and flash flooding that sent people scurrying for dry land and crumbled mud-brick houses around Aswan, the largest city in southern Egypt." "Then came the scorpions. . . Deathstalker scorpions — or, as they are known to scientists, Leiurus quinquestriatus — are part of daily life for Aswanis. . . Still, 503 bites in one night is unheard-of. . . . A deathstalker’s sting can kill a child. Adults may also sicken and die, depending on their health and weight, said Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, a molecular toxicology professor at Suez Canal University who studies scorpion venom."https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/15/world/middleeast/scorpions-egypt.html
