Would Emmanuel Macron’s controversial decision to force people to carry a vaccine passport if they wanted to visit everywhere from a bar to a museum backfire and fuel the country’s protest movement? Has anyone noticed that in all the noise and confusion of the global pandemic, there have been two nations that have driven everything, neither of them America. On one hand you have Israel becoming the first nation to achieve majority status with vaccinations, and France, the first nation to demand use of an COVID Immunity Passport, forcing its citizens to get vaccinated. Two days ago, in Toulon, thousands of demonstrators who oppose the vaccine passport sang La Marseillare, the French national athem. The song is literally a call to insurrection and war, to revolution. Since the beginning of the movement of opposition, historical symbols have flourished in the demonstrations: revolutionary, republican, royalist, Napoleonic, regional flags, flags from the 1940 Resistance. Macron is now facing protesters that see themselves as resistance fighters leading historical or even millenarian crusade. In my humble opinion the movement is gaining momentum, growing in numbers and inspiring other european countries. Pro and anti-vaxxers are marching together against the vaccine passports.
