Hello siblings,

I am going to Amir Tsarfati's Bible prophecy conference tomorrow. Silly me: I thought it was in the evening. when I checked my ticket yesterday, I noticed that it was 9 am in the morning.  I have to teach a class Saturday mornings and I did not want to tell my manager to please find a supply teacher because I have to go to a conference.

However, I can't miss this conference. This is our hope.

I texted a Christian friend asking her what to do. after that I called the prayer lines. A wonderful lady prayed with me. I really felt the Holy Spirit. It was amazing.

when I hung up, I sent an honest text to my manager telling her about the mix up with the time of a conference that is important to me. she texted me back saying that she will ask another instructor to combine classes. Nothing is final yet. I need to get confirmation from my manager.

However, I just got a text from my christian friend which sounded a bit harsh and it started with: Unless your job is not important to you, you should not cancel last minute.......

she made me feel bad.

If they get another instructor to take over your classes for tomorrow, then I will go to the Amir conference.  Think of it this way ... its just like if you were sick or had an emergency appointment ... they would have to get a sub anyway, right?  Its not like you skip out of your job duties.  I will forget what that other mean spirited “Christian” friend said.  If you get approval ...then by all means definitely go and have fun at the conference!  : )

You did the right thing to finally talk to your manager. Leave it in her hands. She listened, she heard you, she's attempting to find a replacement for you which shows she is not bothered by your request. Only if no one can be found should you give up the conference and fulfill your day at work. The work place should be honored because of the late notice. It sounds as though your manager is doing what she can to help you, but if there is no replacement, her hands are tied unless she just gives you a free day.

Well, this is not a matter of right and wrong; it's your friend's personal opinion, and if your manager is okay with you taking a day to do something that's important to you, then that shouldn't be anyone else's business.  If you do things like this sparingly, for your own education and enrichment, that's a good thing.

I don't know the policies of the place where you work, but if they truly don't mind, you should go for it.

Hello Geri, Kolleen and David,

Thank you so much for your feedback.

My manager texted me. Another teacher will combine the 2 classes so all is well. I am going to the conference.

Geri, you are right: it's not like I skipped out of my job duties. I explained the situation honestly and my manager had a day to try to do something about it (if she couldn't, then I would have definitely gone to work )

I also sensed my friend was "mean spirited". thank you for confirming that. I thought I was being oversensitive.

Kolleen, thank you for saying that my manager "is attempting to find a replacement which shows she is not bothered by my request"

I really hoped I would not bother her or annoy her.

last Wednesday, I was supply teaching from 9 to 3 pm. She asked me if I can teach in the evening too because a teacher won't be able to make it. I cancelled an appointment and stayed to teach the evening class. then one hour before the class started, she texted me saying that another teacher is sick and to combine the 2 classes. I did that.

My manager knows I do my best and am always willing to help.

David, you are right: My manager seemed OK with it so it should not be somebody else's business.

I am doing things like that sparingly. I have been teaching part-time at this school for a year. This is the second time I couldn't come to work.  The first time, I was very sick and could hardly talk so there was no way I could teach.

So your boss would let you know if it wasn't okay. You said you had peace after praying and then contacted your boss who gave you the go ahead... sounds like you got your answer. As to the message from your friend... sometimes text messages and emails can come across more harshly than they are meant. I have a dry sense of humor and have learned to add emojis so folks know I am texting something funny... not saying that this wasn't the case, but maybe she wasn't meaning to be harsh. It might seem hard, but forgive and give her the benefit of the doubt... then you can go to this conference refreshed and ready to have an amazing time. I am wishing so much that I could go to this conference. I follow Amir Tsarfati on his youtube channel (and Jan Markell)... I have been hearing about it for awhile. You are going to have a wonderful time and will be super jazzed to be there - go with a clear heart and mind!

Either way the Lord shall bless your heart!  Count on it. :good:

If you have demonstrated a good work ethic at work, then I'm sure they would be willing to work with you.

Don't sweat what you have no control over.  Our life down here is too short!
