Starbucks to Phase Out Iconic Disposable Cup, Will Install Washing Stations For Reusable Mugs to Help with Its Long-Term Climate Goals: The coffee chain giant officially ditched plastic straws in 2020 and replaced them with sippy cup lids. Since giving customers baby sippy cups wasn’t ‘green’ or ‘woke’ enough, the coffee chain is now working to eliminate its disposable cups with a ‘bring your own mug’ or ‘borrow-a-cup’ program. Cup-washing stations will be installed next to the bathroom with needle disposable boxes used by drug addicts. To phase out disposables, Starbucks is considering a widespread borrow-a-cup program, in which customers pay a deposit for a durable cup that they take with them and drop back off after use. For that test, customers paid a $1 deposit, and had to return the cup to a smart bin located in the store to get their dollar back. Customers also earned rewards for using the cup.
