I would certainly not like to think so!

It seems that many who claim to know the Lord's heart often are the first to ascribe trials, tribulations and natural disasters in particular to God's vindictive behavior?!  As a direct knee jerk reaction to what we have done.

But God operates from the heart of a loving Father longing that we grow in the knowledge of Him and His ways.  Grow in our Faith.  Grow in virtue.  And grow in the knowledge that He desires us to seek His face in all things, not just when trials and tribulations appear!

Perhaps I am mincing or parsing words here, or perhaps I speak of a proper perspective.  But it seems to me that speaking in truth is a function of wisdom!

Truly, the wrath of the Lord God Almighty will soon be upon this world, but not while the Church remains!  I am indeed all for wisdom and discernment as much as the next guy.  But discernment and wisdom tell me that God is not a vindictive being.

He truly is righteous and just!  I just think it prudent not to so readily assign any negative motives to His actions, or perceived actions!  As I can say with full assurance that indeed the Lord is not vindictive or petty!

Please let me know if I am in any way being presumptuous with my words!

I agree the Lord is righteous and just in His judgments and He gives us instructions to follow to those who mistreat us ... while He will take care of our enemies in His timing.

Perhaps by our kindness towards our enemies, they might get saved?  And He is giving them another chance to repent before He takes action?

Romans 12:17-19

Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

I totally agree that the Lord is not vindictive or petty. I also believe that God is not a God of wrath. I used to say that God is a God of love but also of wrath but I have repented of this view because I believe that saying that misrepresents Gods nature. God is indeed a God of love, his primary nature, but because He is also Holy He must uphold His holy nature by being wrathful when He needs to.

I think some of our English bibles can lead us astray here and whenever I read passages, that on the surface, seem to suggest that God is a God of wrath, when I dig a little into my concordance the passage is saying that God is exercising His wrath and not that He is a God of wrath.

Nahum 1:2 (NASB)

A jealous and avenging God is the Lord;
The Lord is avenging and wrathful.
The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

Nahum 1:2 (KJV)

God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

I really like Isaiah 28:21 KJV :-

For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

I believe the bible describes God's wrath being poured out as His "strange" work or act because that is not His nature. God's nature is love and I for one am thankful for that, and even more thankful that love took Him all the way to Calvary.

Praise the Lord

Well said.  Indeed the Lord disciplines those He loves.  He is also a forgiving God!

But every time man passes a law or proposes some treaty we all are too readily eager to  look for some event or disaster to blame God for.  Saying the Lord has certainly retaliated.

I don't think this a healthy or wise axiom to engage in.  Indeed there are consequences to our decisions and those consequences will eventually materialize.  This is also just.

Again we must also remember that the Prince of the Air who rules over the hearts of many men as well as fallen creation is a liar, fraud and destroyer of all things good which God has created.

It just seems to me that discerning between good and evil rightly will tell us if we truly understand the Lord's heart.
