Lee,

There are some great generators out there. I have one that will run an AC unit and microwave at the same time. I also rediscovered cooking coffee in a percolator so I won't have to use the electric coffee pot and save on the batteries. I'm trying to get to the point where I have reduced my need for electricity in case of emergency, so I have most things in redundancy, one thing using electricity and the other not. I have two USB powered fans that do a great job pushing air. They recharge on that little solar power brick.

Yohanan - I have one and my hubby has one! They are so easy to use and fairly quick. We got ours from patriot supplies, but I believe they are on Amazon as well now…

Lee — solar is great. My husband sales solar as a PT job (hobby) and we have solar on the roof. My electric bill is $8.00 a month and we bank the heavy summer build up for our winter use. I run the AC all summer and love my low bill…. Because we also feed the grid, we get a monthly monetary kickback as well, its been nice.

As much as I love solar and have several solar charging panels for devices, you need to be cautious on depending solely on solar. You will generate little to none on very stormy, heavy cloud days. Of course if you live in Texas, AZ, NV, NM, southern CA you will probably not have to be concerned about the lack of sun :mdrmdr:

Also, there are lot of options — I have the mini side kick by 4Patriot and it worked great this last storm. Lasted for all 7 hours for lights and devices.

So many options —- have you seen the AC created by filling tow 16oz soda bottles (minus the soda) with ice cubes and hooking them to the back of a fan for blowing cool air around — clever idea for sure, as long as you have ice :mdrmdr:

:mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr:  my apologies Kolleen — my poor tired brain was on a role with air conditioning and solar and I remembered that YT on the fan idea and well it just went  …..

Nope, I do not plan to be here when that AC arrives and funny thought about sticking him inside a 16 oz soda bottle tied to the back of a fan :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :mdrmdr: :calvin

Thanks for all the ideas.  I'm not concerned about devices.  My concern is the refrigerator and furnace.  The last time the electricity went out I told Bob If we're still here ... I'll be saving for a whole house generator.

Thanks friends!    I was a scout and raised in a scouting family.  Grandad started BSA in our CT town in the 1920's.  Anyway we have a nice camping backup for many things - including a percolator. LOL  Been a prepper all my life, crazy story:  In Dec. 2000, (Y2K)   I had 9 months of food and supplies for my family of 12, and gave out 3 day supply boxes to neighbors and friends.  Only bought what we used so nothing was wasted.  I did downsize preps in retirement to Myrtle Beach.

Can't wait to meet you all  in person.

You notice that coffee is on the top of my priority list. :mdrmdr:  A good cup of coffee cures a lot of woes 😁
