I often read people can’t wait to hear the shofar and others are looking for the trumpet to sound.  Just wondering are we going to hear both sounds?  This passage clearly shows its the trumpet so why are others waiting for the shofar?

I Thess 4:16-18

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

The word Paul uses for "trumpet" is Salpigx:

This was an ancient Greek instrument and was straight, not curved as the Shofar is.  However, I think Paul was emphasizing the startling loudness of the sound and not speaking of the shape of the instrument.  The "trump" might be the voice of God Himself.

Thanks for sharing this info., David.  It sure puts a whole new meaning on what we are going to hear ... God’s mighty voice calling us to rise!

So the same applies to I Cor. 15:52 ... In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

What about with the 7 trumpet judgements.  Do you think a trumpet will be sounding or is it also God’s voice will be giving a command instead?

Well, the judgments appear to be initiated by the actions of the angels who are assigned to blow the trumpets.  That would be under God's authorization, 0f course.  And since the other judgments (such as the bowls) are carried out by the angels, then I'm thinking they might be actual trumpets sounding.  I also wouldn't want to be dogmatic about the nature of the Last Trumpet, other than to say it's unclear about whether a shofar is used, another type of trumpet, or just God's voice sounding like a trumpet.

Reminds me of a passage I love from Hebrews 12:18-24.  We'll come to the heavenly Jerusalem at the sound of a trumpet...!!

For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them.  For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.”  Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
