Gallup poll finds a massive shift in political preferences away from Democrats to Republicans: The poll found that quarterly averages for party identification in 2021 showed that about 40% of Americans considered themselves Republicans in the first quarter, while 49% considered themselves Democrats. But by the end of 2021, only 42% of Americans considered themselves Democrats while 47% considered themselves Republicans. Those two margins were also the largest that Gallup had measured in thirty years.
