I didn’t know about this song until I read the article this afternoon about Merle Haggard’s passing. He died today on his 79th birthday. Love the words to this song and it is like a peek into this man’s heart.

I do love country music and I love this song. It is now one of my new favorites. So glad to know that Merle passed on into a glorious future with Jesus above.

“SWEET JESUS” written by Merle Haggard, sung by The Oak Ridge Boys and Merle Haggard

The Oak Ridge Boys talk about recording this song:

The Oak Ridge Boys‘ latest album, Rock of Ages: Hymns and Gospel Favorites, features mostly traditional hymns that the four men — Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban — grew up listening to as children. But one song on the album is a brand-new track: “Sweet Jesus” was penned by Merle Haggard, and the country legend wrote it with the award-winning quartet in mind.

“My son, Paul Martin, was playing with Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives,” Allen recalls to The Boot. “They were doing the RFD television show, and Merle was a guest. So Merle came in and gave Paul a CD of a song and said, ‘I wrote this. Would you get it to Duane and see if he’ll record it?’”

Allen knew right away that the song was something he wanted for the Oak Ridge Boys, even though he wasn’t sure if or when there would be a project on which it would fit.

“I listened to it, and I loved it,” Allen recalls. “I called Merle, quite a bit before we cut the album, and said, ‘Merle, I’m sending out right now a live album. It doesn’t fit that, because the album’s of hits. And I’m about to mix a Christmas album. It doesn’t fit that. But if you will wait a little bit, I think I’m going to cut a hymns album somewhere down the line. If you’ll just hold it, I think I can get it on, and we can cut it.’ I didn’t know that Bill Gaither was going to call me and ask for a hymns album.”

When the guys finally went into the studio to record “Sweet Jesus,” they realized that something was still lacking in the powerful song.

“I called Merle and said, ‘We’ve got these dates ready to go in the book, and we want to cut this song, but the recitation in the second verse, I don’t think I can do it justice,’” Allen explains. “‘I think maybe it’s for you. Would you honor us with recording with the Oak Ridge Boys on this song you wrote for us. Would you consider that?’”

“We loved the recitation and thought if we could just get Merle to do that recitation, we would be thrilled,” Allen says. “But then, it worked so well that Merle just kept on singing with us on the last chorus — a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of the Oak Ridge Boys. It is one of the biggest thrills of my career to get to sing and record with Merle Haggard.”

Texas Sue Do you know when he wrote and recorded that song? Back in 1976-77 I can remember him playing 21 at Harrah’s casino in Reno he would have a dealer all to himself and he was the only one I ever saw park his feet with those suede boots up on the 21 table while playing cards. I really didn’t have a good opinion of him doing that I use to think he really thinks he is superior than the other people what nerve. He did this for months. So any idea when he could have an awaking?

Please Lord Jesus come quickly and take your bride away. Amen!
Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

The Oak Ridge Boys recorded their “Rock of Ages” album in 2015 not long after Merle Haggard asked them to sing his song so it was written very recently. I know that George Jones had a rough life and was saved after he almost died in a car wreck. He had been drinking (famous for that) and hit a concrete support for a highway overpass. After recovering the only person he asked to see was Vestal Goodman. She shared Jesus with him and he prayed the sinners prayer that day and was gloriously saved. Perhaps he had some influence on his old friend Merle Haggard. The song was written by him last year.

Here is the CBN interview with George Jones who tells his testimony. The last two or three minutes he tells about the wreck and calling for Vestal.

I am sure that he had quite an influence over not only his closest friends but others in country music that he knew with his testimony of how God changed him.

Thanks for sharing that Texas Sue,

I did hear Tammy Wynette perform once at the State Fair close to 40 years ago, my husband tried to get her autograph for his mother since she was her favorite singer but she was suffering from exhaustion and he was refused. I have to confess I never tuned into country music on the radio dial. So I was completely unaware that Merle Haggard recorded that song sweet Jesus it was the first time that I had heard it was listening to that you tube you posted.

It has been more than 50 years ago since my elder sister took me to a concert where we saw the Everly Brothers, Mini Pearl, Red Foley if there were any other performers there I don’t remember. Can you imagine all the sweet music that will be playing in heaven.
