Iran on Friday sent what Israel’s Foreign Ministry mockingly called an “Eid al-Fitr gift” — on the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan — toward one of the most combustible places on earth, with dramatic footage capturing the moment fragments from an intercepted ballistic missile crashed into Jerusalem’s Old City near the Temple Mount and Western Wall in an area sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike.

According to Israeli authorities, the missile was intercepted, but fragments fell into a parking lot in the Jewish Quarter just a few hundred meters from the Western Wall and the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound atop the Temple Mount, causing damage but no reported injuries.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs seized on the symbolism of the moment, declaring on X: “The Iranian ‘gift’ for Eid al-Fitr: Missiles on Al-Aqsa.” The ministry added that the attack near holy sites “sacred to all three religions reveals the madness of the Iranian regime, which claims to be religious.”

The killing of Iran’s National Security Council secretary, Ali Larijani, and Basij militia head Gholamreza Soleimani on Monday night represents a significant shift in the tactics of the Iran war. 

Israeli intelligence discovered Larijani was gathering with other officials at a hideout on the outskirts of Tehran, enabling his elimination. This operation reflected Israel’s strategy of meticulous intelligence gathering, leveraging both advanced capabilities and an already established network of assets operating inside Iran.

However, the elimination of Larijani and Soleimani also resulted from human intelligence provided by ordinary Iranians, not pre-established sources.

While Israeli intelligence officials had been attempting to track Larijani over the days leading up to his killing, valuable intelligence received from residents of Tehran 'over the past 24 hours' proved critical to his elimination, an Israeli official told Iran International. Those Iranian residents were able to contact Israeli officials through a secure channel established by Israel after the outbreak of the war.

The fact that critical intelligence came from the Iranian public is part of a strategy that Israel had hoped to achieve in its fight against a deeply entrenched regime. 

Now, Israel’s intelligence is moving to a new strategy; on the one hand, gathering intelligence from Iranian citizens, and, on the other, attempting to convince security personnel to switch sides. 

The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel’s Mossad has even begun directly contacting some of the security officers, threatening them if they take action against the people in the event of another popular uprising. 

The WSJ cited a conversation from a call between a senior Iranian police commander and a Mossad agent: “Can you hear me?” the Mossad agent asks in Farsi.

“We know everything about you. You are on our blacklist, and we have all the information about you,” he continued. 

“OK,” the commander says in the recording. 

“I called to warn you in advance that you should stand with your people’s side,” the Mossad agent says. “And if you will not do that, your destiny will be as your leader. Do you hear me?” 

“Brother, I swear on the Quran, I’m not your enemy,” the commander responds. “I’m a dead man already. Just please come help us.” 

While Prime Minister Netanyahu and the IDF have emphasized that Israel’s primary goal is not regime change, they have also stated their intention to create conditions that could enable the Iranian people to challenge and potentially overthrow the government.

President Donald Trump stated that there would be “NO MORE ATTACKS” by Israel after Israel was reported to have launched strikes on Iran’s South Pars Gas Field.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the United States “knew nothing about this particular attack,” and added that Qatar “was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it.” Trump explained that because “Iran did not know” Qatar was not involved in the attack, Iran “unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG Gas facility.”

“Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran,” Trump said. “A relatively small section of the whole has been hit. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen.”

“Unfortunately, Iran did not know this, or any of the pertinent facts pertaining to the South Pars attack, and unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG Gas facility,” Trump added. “NO MORE ATTACK WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar – In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.”

The South Pars Gas Field is described as “the world’s largest natural gas reserve”

While Trump said the U.S. knew nothing about the attack, “an Israeli official” claimed to the outlet that “the attack was coordinated” with the U.S.
