Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano spews gas into the air near capital

MEXICO – Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano has been spewing gas, water vapor and incandescent materials into the skies near the country’s capital for days, registering at least 14 “exhalations” late on Wednesday and in the early hours of Thursday, according to local media. The most significant emissions came on Tuesday afternoon and were accompanied by a small quantity of ash, scientists said, according to Excelsior newspaper reported. The civil protection officials have been giving evacuation training in communities near Popocatepetl ahead of a possible eruption, Reuters reported. The 17,886-foot volcano 40 miles southeast of the Mexican capital is the country’s second-highest peak and has experienced at least 15 major eruptions in the last 500 years. In November, Popocatepetl spewed a burst of ash three miles into the air after breaking through a dome of lava. The volcano has been erupting intermittently since December 1994. -MSNBC

Wow, this thread is really chocked full of news!  I will have to take time to read and look at it all later.

A weird thing...  A little while ago I was changing channels on the tv, and you know how you have to keep the tv on channel 3 to run it through the digital signal box?  Well, I accidently took it off channel 3 and it make the most awful noise from the tv - because it could no longer pick up the channel correctly - and it sounded A LOT like the sky sounds everyone is hearing!  Weird!  I am wondering if those sounds aren't some sort of frequency that is not matched up right or something...?  Who knows - but I'm bettin it is some sort of frequency thingy.

Another Earthquake Struck the South Pacific Ocean.

February 5, 2012 - A 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Near Vanuatu: This is the third earthquake to strike near Vanuatu in the last four days. A 6.9 magnitude quake hit Feb. 2nd, 6.0M on Feb. 3rd and 6.0M on Feb. 6th (because of the International date line). The tremor struck at a depth of 4 kilometers (2 miles). It was 3:40AM at the epicenter on Feb. 6th.; 11:40AM (Feb. 5th) in New York, 10:40AM in Chicago, 9:40AM in Denver and 8:40AM in Los Angeles.
The tremor occurred 76 miles west of Port-Vila, Vanuatu; 167 miles south of Santo (Loganville), Vanuatu; 176 miles northwest of Isangel, Vanuatu; and 1,117 miles ENE of Brisbane, Australia (see map).

Current seismicity in the Philippines as tectonic plate agitation increases

February 5, 2012 – PHILIPPINES – The Philippines, like Japan, sits in one of the most volatile tectonic areas on Earth but unlike Japan, the Philippines is under geological assault from plate movements on all sides. The Philippine plate is squeezed in between the Eurasian plate and the Pacific Plate, but the situation is more complex than that. The Philippine Islands are surrounded by complex plate boundaries, and the Philippines Plate rather consists of several micro-plates – squeezed in between two convergent plate margins. The lines with black triangles are active subduction zones with teeth on the over-riding plate. Lines with white triangles are passive subduction zones with teeth on the over-riding plate. The major Philippine fault zone is shown as a black line with arrows showing the movement direction. The volcanoes Pinatubo and Mayon are shown as red dots. The volcanoes of the Philippines are probably the most deadly in world. Both Pinatubo and Mayon are both capable of producing VEI6 type eruptions. Because the moon’s tidal influence is so great in the Pacific, volcanologists warned in 2006 that Mount Mayon could explode at any time and that the gravitational pull of a full moon could provide the final push. A full moon coincided with at least three of Mayon’s nearly 50 explosions over the last four centuries, including the two most recent in 2000 and 2001. The volcanoes are concentrated in a northern volcanic arc above and east of the north-western subduction zone (Manila Trench) and in a southern volcanic arc above and west of the south-eastern subduction zone (Philippine trench).The Sulu trench also produce a (discontinuous) line of active volcanoes. The Mayon volcano may be associated with the transform fault that connects the eastern and the western subduction zones. This transform fault is offset by the younger north-south directed Philippine Fault. The Eurasian Plate is being subducted along the western side of Luzon and Mindoro at a rate of 3cm/year. The Philippine Fault Zone decouples the northwestward motion of the Pacific with the southwestward motion of the Eurasian Plate. Movements along other active faults are responsible for the present-day high seismicity of the Philippine Archipelago. –The Extinction Protocol

Global Incident Map is saying that the above quakes, there were 3 of them, all 6.8, were at depths of 3.3, 4.6, and 4.6 KM.  This is getting crazy!  They just changed one of these to a 6.7 and say that the depth is at 20KM not 4.6KM on one of them.

Alert level raised on Indonesia’s Semeru volcano

February 6, 2012 – INDONESIA - A slight increase in activity of Semeru volcano’s activity has been observed by the Indonesian Geological Survey in recent weeks and its alert level was raised to 3 (out of 4, watch) on 3 February 2012, after it had been on level 2 since 16 July 2009. Only small to moderate eruptions had been occurring over most of the past year. Between 29 December and 15 January, 8 explosions were counted which produced ash clouds up to 600 m high. One explosion threw incandescent bombs to a distance of 300 m from the Jonggring Seloko crater. During 15-29 January, only weak explosions were recorded and a small steam and ash plume rising 25-50 m was observed. Between 30 and 31 January, 5 explosions were recorded. They produced incandescent fallout in up to 400 m distance. On 2 February at 07:47 local time, a stronger explosion produced incandescent bombs that reached 750 m distance and caused a small avalanche of blocks rolling down a distance of up to 2.5 km. The heightened activity triggered the raise in alert level the following day. At its present status level of 3, PVMBG recommends to stay away at least 4 km from the summit on the SE side of the volcano and climbers are advised not to approach the Jonggring Seloko crater less than 1 km. As of 6 February, no significant changes to its activity have been reported by our correspondent on location. –Volcano Discovery

Rumblings from volcanoes on northern Mariana Islands

February 7, 2012 – MARIANA ISLANDS - We have a source that provides weekly (or more) reports when something is rumbling in the Northern Mariana Islands, mostly for the benefit of people living on the islands and any air traffic in the region. The population of the CNMI is fairly low, ~53,000 people, and dispersed across many islands, so the volcanoes are not a threat to any large population center, but they are definitely active and potentially dangerous. One of the more active volcanoes in the Mariana Islands chain is Pagan on the island of the same name (see above). The island itself is actually two volcanoes – North and South Pagan – both of which were built inside calderas. Most of the recent activity has been from North Pagan, although eruptions from South Pagan occurred in 1864 (and possibly in 1929). Although most of the activity from North Pagan is fairly minor – VEI 1-2 explosive events – 1981 did see an VEI 4 eruption that produced explosions and lava flows. This means that keeping an eye on the current activity on Pagan is well worth our time. The latest report from Pagan notes a ~3 km/10,000 foot plume from the volcano that is mostly steam, although various reports suggest there might be small amounts of ash mixed in. As mentioned in the report, Pagan has no permanent ground monitoring, so all the reports are from either remote sensing via satellite or pilot’s reports as they pass near the island. Due to these plumes, Pagan has been on Yellow Alert status (Advisory) since October 2011. The largest eruption in the recent past in the Northern Mariana Islands was from Anatahan in 2003, the first historic eruption of that volcano, showing that even the quieter volcanoes need to be watched. –Wired

Phivolcs records an astounding 900 aftershocks in first 24 hours after 6.9 magnitude earthquake

February 7, 2012 – PHILIPPINES – The local seismology monitors recorded as much as 900 mild aftershocks as of noontime today after the 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Central Visayas on Feb. 6. According to the local Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), through Engineer Nolan Evangelista, aftershocks are just ordinary incidents after a major earth movement. Evangelista also shared that the most noticeable aftershocks reached intensity 3 that was recorded at around 6:10 p.m. yesterday and another one at 7:32 p.m., which reached intensity 2. “There have been numerous aftershocks but most of them were so mild, Boholanos did not seem to notice them. Since these are aftershocks, these are never stronger than the major earthquake, unless another movement is caused by another or a similar fault,” Evangelista added. He also explained that the Phivolcs has earlier issued intensity reference charts. These charts help ordinary people measure the intensity of the earthquake while looking at the objects shaken by the tremor.

On the other hand, a magnitude scale usually issued by the Phivolcs uses the equipment recorded data which are available in their office. It means that a magnitude scale reading is a more accurate measurement of the tremor than an intensity scale which can be subjective of one’s personal experience, he said. Surviving with reports of very mild damages in cracked buildings, Bohol has also shuddered at the tremors that came after. Over this, school authorities have suspended classes in kindergarten to secondary levels so building officials and Department of Education (DepEd) authorities can inspect the integrity of school structures. Dr. Lorna Rances, schools division superintendent, urged local and school officials to help assess the damages in school buildings in their areas of responsibility and subsequently issue certifications of safe occupancy of school buildings to DepEd so that classes can resume. Yesterday, some residents felt worried when text messages about an impending tsunami circulated, after a Phivolcs-issued tsunami warning number 2. Engineer Evangelista explained that Phivolcs tsunami alert 2 means that there is a certainty that meter high waves do come and that residents in coastal areas are advised to move away from the 20-meter zones from the sea levels for their safety. It means there is a real possibility that water may rise a meter high, but in yesterday’s case, it should have come to Bohol an hour after the major quake, he said. –PIA.gov

Mt. Cameroon volcano erupts in Cameroon

February 8, 2012 – CAMEROON – Mt. Cameroon volcano in Cameroon seems to have started a new eruption. According to local news, mild tremors and explosions were noted at the volcano during the past week, intensifying last Friday. A group of tourists is reported to have fled the volcano after they heard loud explosions, followed by earthquakes. “We heard a heavy explosion followed by some earth vibrations. It lasted about 7 seconds. There were flames and sulphuric acid coming out of a spot where we found ash and we decided to go back down,” Peter Linonge Buma, a guide accompanying the tourists is quoted in a news article. The explosions seem to be strong enough to rattle doors and windows in nearby villages where most residents are preparing to evacuate. The last eruptions of Mt. Magma plume: large explosions seen at Mt. Etna volcano

February 9, 2012 – ITALY -Tremor continues to rise (now at 13), from the webcam image, it seems a lava flow is starting to issue from the SE fracture. All indicators point towards we are having the 2nd paroxysm in 2012 during the next hours! The volcanic tremor is now steeply rising (at 8) and vigorous strombolian activity can be seen on the various webcams, possibly a lava flow has started as well. While strombolian activity continues from the New SE crater of Etna volcano, volcanic tremor has started to rise, suggesting a new paroxysm could be in the making in the next hours, although it is still early to be certain. The photo (left) from Boris Behncke was taken during the night of 7-8 February 2012, when the continuing strombolian activity of the New Southeast Crater on Etna was finally widely visible, after about one week of essentially bad weather. Some explosions threw incandescent lava bombs outside the crater, although most were rather weak and all material fell back into the crater. This is a view of one of the stronger explosions observed on the late evening of 7 February 2012, taken from Trecastagni village on the southeast flank of Etna. Volcano eruption video: Mount Etna spews lava fountains
Mount Etna volcano on the island of Sicily, Italy, started erupting again on Wednesday, sending flames and sparks into the air, and flows of lava down its slopes. The air space of the nearby Catania-Fontanarossa International Airport reopened after the new eruption phase was over.
