The fast of Yom Ha-Kippurim, the Day of Atonement, will begin this Saturday night October 8 at sunset and continue for twenty-four hours until Sunday October 9 at sunset. This is based on the sighting of the new moon in the Land of Israel.

I started fasting yesterday because my calendar sent to me my Discovering Jewish Jesus states Yom Kippur is sunset Oct 7 to sunset Oct 8. As well as in the yahoo News reports yesterday. 
I hear ya this is the first time I have heard it starting sundown tonight, cause I thought it was on a sabbath which would have started sundown yesterday, and everything thing else I have seen says so too,
He says it's based on the sighting of the new moon... (when someone actually saw it with their eyes) which was a a day after technology spots it..so, it depends if you go with technology or the traditional way.

I don't think it has to do with sighting the new moon as the moon is almost full at 90% right now. The only feast with a new moon sighting is Rosh Hashanah.
jonathan is correct. people have to understand that there is a difference between the biblical instructions as to dating the Holy Days, and what the rabbinical Jews do today.

there used to be a sticky about this but it was removed. jonathan, we could probably use another sticky about the actual dates for the Bibical Holy Days.

traditionally, months and holidays were based on sighting the moon;
1 Tishrei wasn't until moon sighted, actually on 30th, although calendars say the 29 Sept.
So Tishrei 9- 10, sundown to sundown would depend on when Tishrei 1 was. This is why Yom Kippur would be calculated a day later if by the moon sighting. Moon sighting is the way it was done in Jesus' time. So yes sundown tonight the 8th-sundown 9th could be interpreted as Yom Kippur.
The calculated new moon for printing calendars does not always coincide with when the moon is actually sighted .

Your right Destiny. I don't know why I thought the first post was asking about RH, but that is what I was referring to.
Okay... (edited to add) I went back to read the whole thread and that is why I must have said that... yes... because the holidays are pushed back due to the sighting of the new moon.. if you go by the traditional way.
yes destiny, that's right. the first sighting, by two witnesses in Jerusalem, of the first crescent of the new moon, was a day after the "orthodox" start date.
the "orthodox" start date is based on technology, since we now have the technological capability to know when the first crescent appears, even if we cannot see it ourselves.
The crest of the moon was seen on Sept. 29th, then add 10 days and you come to Oct. 9th Sunday for the Yom Kippur by the Bible dating..
I noticed back in 2009 that the Israeli of today is starting their Yom Teruah two days earlier than what they are suppose to do according to the Bible..
For those that are using the Stellarium program, and live anywhere besides Israel, be sure to always set the program up for Israel's time and your computer time to Israel as well.. I set my program to Jerusalem time with the LAT. and LONG., then save settings as "default".. Afterwards before I run the program I set my Computer time to match Jerusalem's time as well... That way you are following the Bible daings from God's viewpoint.
