James M. Black, born in Scotland in the latter part of the 1800s, became the victim of two tragedies during his life time. Between those two terrible events ---his kidnapping at age eight and his death in an automobile accident later in life--Black managed many accomplishments that live on into this present day, not the least of which was writing the music to the well-known song, "When The Saints Go Marching In".

In his teen years Black was active in various kinds of volunteer service. As a young man he came to America and joined the Epworth League in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, an organization that worked primarily with young people. While with the Epworth League, Black wrote a gospel song called, "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder". Although he is well known for that composition, his most famous work is "When The Saints Go Marching In". The lyrics to Black's catchy tune were added by poet Katherine Purvis in 1896.

But it was not until Louis Armstrong recorded "The Saints' on Decca records in 1948 that the song's popularity soared. Many others would record it over time , but never with as much success as the original "Satchmo" rendition.

"The Saints" continues to increase in popularity even today. We hear it on college campuses, in churches of all sizes, on TV programs, movies, and in gatherings of people of numerous ethnic origins, young and old. Crowds pack New Orleans Preservation Hall to hear brass bands play, "The Saints," by far their most requested song. It seems that almost every person in America can sing at least a portion of the song or hum part of the tune.

Trav'ling through this world of sin.
Getting ready for that meeting,
When the Saints go marching in.

O Lord, I want to be in that number,

Just a few more days to travel,
Just a few more days to roam,
Then I'll enter Heaven's portals,
When the saints are gathered home.

One line of the song, "O Lord, I want to be in that number" seems to be sung, for the most part , very lightly and flippantly. But what does it mean? It means simply, "God I want to be one of those who will gain entrance into Heaven when my life on this earth is through."

But no one can be "in that number" simply by singing a song. If you want to truly be "in that number," here's what you need to do:

1. Admit that you are "just a weary pilgrim, trav'ling through this world of sin."

The Bible says this about our sin, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23; 6:23).

2. Acknowledge you cannot "be in that number" and enter heaven on your own.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." (John 14:6) and "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." (John 11:25)

3. Realize that Jesus died and rose again to get you "into that number."

"For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ, died for the ungodly" (Romans 5:6). "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you." (1 Peter 1:3-4).

4. Accept God's offer of salvation and "be in that number" today!

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and though shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). Jesus said, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever..." (John 6:51).

Are you willing dear pilgrim, to let Christ make you worthy to "be in that number?" If you are, bow your head and pray this prayer sincerely from your heart:

Dear Lord,

I want to "be in that number" when my time on earth is through. I want to spend eternity in heaven with You. I realize that I cannot save myself, but I do now trust Jesus Christs as my Savior. I confess my sins before you. Wash my sins away in Your own blood, the blood that You shed for me on the cross. Save me right now, and make me worthy of a home in Heaven with You forever. Amen

....If you sincerely prayed that prayer, then God has saved you and come into your life. Jesus is your Savior. Congratulations! You are now "in that number!"

@ Destiny (Fellow Spoiler of Cats)....ok, um yeh I remember one time my cousin was over, this was when I was a teen or preteen. She slept with me on my bed. I had this tall narrow mirror next to my bed with Jesus pictures taped all over it.

She had this disgusted tone to her voice and said, "What are you some sort of Jesus freak?!"

No, of course not. The point being made there in Matthew is to not be ashamed of Christ...ever! If someone asks you, stand proud and proclaim yourself a believer in Jesus. In Romans the point is that you're not just speaking out meaningless words. If you believe in your heart he was raised from the dead and actually speak your belief too... that free ticket is yours.

God is not trying to trap you with a game that you can miss a play.

SHORT: Not to someone every day, but to someone some day, start by to YHWH (The Father Himself)

Read the quotes for yourself, in context.
The Matthew passage is in the context of persecution, of having your faith, even your just conversion challenged is says that if you confess Him and not deny Him on earth. He will confess you in before His Father in Heaven.

The Romans passage among other things speaks of calling upon the Name of The LORD, that can be a private thing

Of course the great commission asks us to share the gospel.

I cannot say that someone is not saved until another human has heard their confession of Christ.

And there is absolutely nothing anywhere I've ever seen in scripture that says your are going to hell if you don't tell someone about Jesus every day.

For instance let's say um someone got saved. Then he confessed with his mouth Jesus before someone that day, then the next day, and the next, and the next, and every single day for the rest of his life, he told at least one person Jesus is his Lord and Saviour. Well, all except for one day.

So because he missed just one day is he going to Hell just because he missed one day? Should we run around saying to people, Jesus is my Lord because we are afraid if we don't that Jesus will deny us before the Father because we didn't confess Him with our mouths literally every day?

My husband and I heard about a program, through our church, where you can be online missionaries and pray for and counsel people in all parts of the world. This is great for me since I am a little bit of a computer geek, and I get to be a missionary too! Not sure about the rules of posting a link, but it is http://www.globalmediaoutreach.com. After a little training, you are able to communicate with people in all parts of the world who need prayer, just accepted Christ or really anything. To make a long story short, if it isn't too late, I get at least 4 emails a day (through this site) from people who have accepted Christ for the first time. I saw the thread of being addicted to RITA Now and I believe I am as well and would LOVE nothing more than for the rapture to happen..yesterday! But I think God just showed me that there are still people getting saved on a daily basis. Not to say that any one of them couldn't be "the last one" and maybe it was just for me to see since I live and breathe rapture and end times news. But I just felt led to share this with all of you.

Just some tips I believe will be effective.

I can honestly tell you I've had numerous people ask me why I have so much faith and the only thing I tell them is to ask the Lord to reveal Himself to them.  That's how I was saved and He has never failed me- not one single time!  I simply tell them that there's nothing I can say to convince them to believe but I know someone who can.  I tell them to simply ask the Lord to reveal Himself and He will prove Himself faithful over and over and over and over again!  Our Lord is KING!

When I started talking to him about the gospel, I felt the fire inside me - that burning desire to lead this person to the Lord. Alas, it is still up to that person to decide. Sometimes I do despise free will. Verily I'd rather be a slave to God than be liberated from Him. Anyway, I just don't want him to be at the the point where he will be so desperate to fill the void in his life that he would do crazy things. I don't want him to hit rock bottom to find God. He has already told me that he is emotionally and spiritually drained - empty.

Yes I need to go beyond the Word of God and find proofs in this world that the God we worship is the true God. I failed to do that. I should start taking down notes again. I do have a problem of showing God to the lost through my works though because the fact that I still sin (although it is my flesh and not my inner self) most unbelievers will focus on my mistakes rather than see the light in me. And truth is that has happened to me.

Hah.. it is so easy for us to see God but it is so difficult for the lost to comprehend the wonderful truth...

First, ask them what they do believe in. You can then address his specific reasons as to why he is currently unable to believe in Yeshua. Or, you can begin very simply. Ask him if he knows how the universe began. Often, folks will cite the Big Bang theory. Ask him what caused the initial 'bang,' and what caused the initial singularity from which matter, energy, space, time and all the physical laws on the universe emerged from. Explain the Kalam cosmological argument (see William Lane Craig at http://www.reasonablefaith.org for detailed discussions on this). This argument is logically airtight; all the premises are true, and thus the conclusion is true:

1. That which begins to exist has a cause (this is true based on observation and laws of logic--nothing comes into existence by itself; this does not apply to God, because God is eternal and has always existed).

2. The universe began to exist (proved scientifically in the Big Bang theory).

3. Therefore, the universe has a cause.

If you take the rules of logic to then examine the nature or qualities that this cause must have to generate matter, energy, time, space and physical laws, the most reasonable conclusion is that this cause must be a mind (because it has willpower; in this case, to create) who is omnipotent (to cause such things as a universe, time and physical laws, at the very least, requires a massive amount of power) and has such qualities as justice, morality, pattern and symmetry (as evidenced by such things present in creation as a whole, and also in humanity, and in the qualities of this universe found in abstract things, such as mathematics and logic). You could reasonably conclude for other qualities, but this suffices. These qualities match most closely those deities in religious traditions that are personal and thus willed to create the universe and mankind. Examination reveals that the only deity that matches these qualities most closely is that from Judeo-Christian tradition.

Then tell him that the Bible is the most highly attested document in history. Compared to other documents from which we base our understandings of history and figures in history, we have more documents than any other work, secular or religious. Given recent archaeological discoveries, like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bible has proven itself to be the most accurate of all religious and historical documents. This cannot be said of the Quran, for example. As to why Christianity is the answer and not Judaism, I can give you an answer, but this might be sufficient for him so I'll stop here.

Now, ask him if that gives him something to sink his teeth into so that he can make his decision. If he has more questions, ask him to come speak to you.

I do not discount approaching someone with sympathy and concern, and having a personal relationship with them. We are to model Christ to all we meet. However, it seems like the first step is to show him how God must and does exist. Then you can move on from there with other things. Start with the above information, first, however. These are just my thoughts, however, so I could be wrong.

Find out about the person and remember about them.  Take an interest in their life story.  When you run into him/her ask questions about how a loved one is doing (you learned earlier someone is aging, ill in their life).  "Has your Dad retired yet?  I remember you were concerned about  his health issues (specifically name if known).  Is he doing any better?  Has that health issue resolved yet?  Has he decided to retire?  I will pray about that for him.  (No matter if of another faith or culture.)  Did you get that job you wanted?  I'm going to pray for you that you get that job.  Did you ever get back to China to visit with your family?"

You take a personal interest in their life story, remember the details, be able to chat over concerns from the last meeting and ready to pray for them later.  You are meeting that person are common ground and establishing relationship, willing to say I'll pray about that for you.  Soon that person wants to know more about this faith and walk you have with Jesus.

If that person needs help in someway; you are ready to assist.  Be a good Samaritan. You live your life as Jesus lived His.  Let them see you act as Jesus would in priorities, decisions, washing feet, feeding hungry, etc.  Acknowledging Jesus is Lord in your life.  Always be interested in their families.  This is deeply personal territory that creates relationship with each other.  "May God bless you in ways you can't even imagine."  Bless the marriage, bless the children, bless something coming up in the other's life.  You are engaging the person and have not yet mentioned the Gospel.

Allow others to bless you in your walk, too.  There's a joining in that which no one turns down.  Col. 4:5-6  Be gracious in speech.  Bring out the best in the other. (each other) You bring the other into your journey.  "I want to bless you."  You encounter not in behavior but really loving the other.  Treat the other as yourself.

John 2:9-11.  If you claim to be in the light but hate a brother then you are a liar.  (paraphrased here.)  Love this Brother or Sister.  Act in love.  Love thy neighbor in such a startling or radical way he can't help but be aware.  Go the extra mile.

It's not about evangelism techniques but engaging in grace.  Choosing to love and get involved.  Choosing to stand in the light; getting out of the darkness because Jesus is Lord!  Love is a choice.  When we chose to love the darkness flees.  You just choose to illustrate the love of God.  Love's choice is so critial in the world today.  Allow them to see Jesus is Lord in everything you do.  This crosses divisive boundaries of class, religion, nationality, walls.  You are choosing to live in radical love.  This says more than any words can ever do.  Blessings dear Brother,  I will pray about your success in evangelizing!  Jesus is Lord!

The "god of this age" (notice the small g - the devil) has blinded the minds of non-believers.  The only way they can begin to listen and see God's truth is through the Holy Spirit.  For the Holy Spirit to start working in a non-believers life we must pray for the "strong man - devil" to be bound up in that persons life.  Then the blinders can come off and we come along and preach/testify the truth.  But it all starts with prayer for God to save that person and it could take praying every day for years.

One of the difficulties is that without the Holy Spirit within them, conversations about truth can sometimes be difficult. They are partially blinded and just don't get it. I've heard of people suggesting that unbelievers "try it" and see. We hear about the good results. From an intellectual viewpoint, I like the fact that of all ancient "works" of literature, the amount supporting the Bible is drastically greater and of higher quality than any other ancient literature. I also like the fact that there were numerous prophecies in the Bible that have been fulfilled, some at the exact time referenced (Christ entering Jerusalem being one of them). Israel becoming a nation after being without a nation for 1878 years being another one.

If you can get them to admit that the Word is true and accurate it's much easier. But that is something most unbelievers won't admit to because it doesn't make sense to them. It's never been opened in their hearts and made alive in their eyes.

Make it personal, as well.  Speak of how you came to know God and how He has changed your own life.  People may argue about how things that happened in the Bible are possible, and if you get sidetracked by details you may lose sight of sharing God's reality in daily life.

One model is found in the encounter of the woman at the well in John 4.  As soon as things got too close to home, she wanted to change the subject to "where is the best place to worship?  Jerusalem or Mt. Gerazim?"  Jesus quickly redirected her back to the One that was to be worshipped.
