At least 15 Egyptian police killed, more kidnapped in al Qaeda Sinai attack
According to first reports, a gang of armed men attacked an Egyptian post on the Egyptian-Israeli border of Sinai, Sunday night, Aug. 5, killing at least 15 Egyptian commandos, injuring many more and kidnapping an unknown number.
The gunmen stormed the “Tahrir Square” post facing the Kerem Shalom crossing into Israel, detonated a bomb car and seized APCs and heavy weapons before withdrawing with their captives. DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources:
A Sinai-based al Qaeda cell appears to have retaliated for the first time to an Israeli counter-terror operation in the Gaza Strip with attacks on Egyptian military personnel on the volatile Egyptian-Israeli border. Their purpose seems to be to loosen Egyptian and Israeli security control on their respective sides of the frontier.
