The global divorce rates are at their highest ever at present. The rates in many countries increased markedly during the 20th century.
Among the nations in which divorce has become commonplace are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Australia and Scandinavia.
Only two other countries do not have civil procedures for divorce: the Vatican City (Roman Catholicism generally abhors the procedure) and The Philippines (which is a predominantly Roman Catholic country).
According to statistics, just one out of five marriages lasts for at least 50 years.
