I know there are several people here who have indicated they will not be setting up a Facebook account as RITAN transitions over from this website.

I think the primary concern, in a very general sense, is focused on security issues and protecting private information. I get that. However, I am interested in hearing if there are any other specific reasons why you are choosing not to set up a Facebook account. I am NOT looking to judge those who have already set up an account or to be used to bring condemnation in any way. I am simply trying to weigh the pros and cons and would value hearing from those who feel strongly about staying off FB.

So, if you can frame your response in a non-judgmental, just-the-facts approach, I would value your input. Thanks.

P.S.–feels a bit like a “virtual” deserted town around here to me. Maybe just my imagination, or maybe not.

John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

    Hi Watchman,

I have seen the damage facebook indirectly does to the naive youth and can’t support it.
The self focus it helps direct dumbs young people down. They are so unaware of things outside
    their narrow circle.

We have a large family and miss a lot of what is going on, pictures ect but just can’t contribute
to the self focus it develops. Like a lot of good ideas evil gathers at the top with its bad command
    decisions.

    Hope that helps.

Anyone who wants my emai to stay in contact who is a poster can I assume get it from the site by requesting it?

I have enjoyed knowning the frequent posters and look forward to meeting face to face in heaven.

    My website is http://www.waragoodwarfare.com

    Hi Watchman,

I had an account on facebook. I deleted it a few months ago. I had joined mainly to find people I have lost touch with and contact them. It was a blessing in that way. However, I am now chatting with these people via email and not using facebook.

I don’t think it is private. I never liked it or felt comfortable using it.

something happend yesterday that got me frustrated and worried. If I go online at work, I only check major news networks like BBC, Fox, …. I also sometimes check my email. I only use my laptop or phone to go to other sites. Yesterday, when I logged in at work, it gave me the option to go to RITAN or Rapture Ready!

Also, it seems that a lot of people get on facebook to boast. please forgive me, I am not talking about anyone on RITAN or any other christian organizations that post on facebook, I am talking about a lot of others who post and are not even christians, they seem to use the site to show new photos of themselves, their homes, families, …. many times it feels like people want to show off.

The last time I went on facebook I saw a post from a good Christian friend and he was boasting about something!
the second thing I saw was a photo of a relative’s daughter. she was looking so haughty and proud. I was really disgusted by both posts and decided I have had enough. I requested that my account be deleted.

Thank you for your posts Watchman, they have encouraged me a lot.

Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and hold you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Thank you for your posts Watchman, they have encouraged me a lot.

Thanks for your kind words Heidi, and your feedback on your thoughts about Facebook. I think I understand most of what you shared. I know that many use Facebook and other social media to project an image, a facade of sorts, as to what their life is really all about. I have no expectation that RITAN will attempt to use it that way, but I think I get your point. I suppose, like so many other things in this world, it has the potential to be used for good and godly things, or evil and worldly things. Kind of like a car. Very beneficial for transportation to worship at church, but not so much for bank robbery getaways or terrorist attacks.

John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. If I could make a suggestion? There is a way to join FB and participate only in RITAN, you can get a free “dummy” email through yahoo or gmail and then set up your user name as whatever you want….like maybe your RITAN name, you then set your settings to friends only and then only join the RITAN group that is closed. You will only get those in your feed and occasionally an add or two.
There has been a very good response on FB and many former posters and members are there plus many of the “lurkers” have joined as well.
Personally, I would sincerely miss all of you waragoodwarfare, Watchman 35, Savedat33, Heidi, Tender Reed, Boulder 95 and others that have been here…I also miss Cherish and Patti Day, TimbersMom and Gypsylove as well. I hope that you might reconsider as it is turning into a lively place and we would all really like to keep the family intact. :rose:
Whatever your choice, know that you all are loved and valued. If we don’t end up seeing you on FB, we look forward to our hopefully really soon, face to face RITAN reunion!

hi Watchman. years ago I was on Facebook and got off because of all the annoying games and contacts, plus because of privacy concerns. and the foul language I saw on younger family member pages just got my anger up. couldn’t believe the language “friends” said on my granddaughter’s page. i ranted about it one day 🙂
i am not comfortable with family photos posted, and removed the ones I had put up. my family keeps bugging me to join, but my husband doesn’t want us there either. in his job, there have been threats in the past toward him and we don’t want a public presence at all where someone could find him or message him. I have felt “safe” on Ritan. I was at the old Rita site since 2010 or thereabouts.
i’ve been feeling sad because its been wonderful to “meet” others who share belief in the literal return of Jesus for us. I will miss people, including you.

in person, I was able to meet blue teapot. I wish you were closer. you will be, when Jesus scoops us up!

Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, you are gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and to him shall the gathering of the people be. Gen 49

Thinking and asking the Lord about it. Thanks for the suggestion and taking time to respond.

The part about the free “dummy” email sounds like a perfect fit (no offense taken… :Hi: ) Ironically, I am a project manager who often runs IT-type projects where I frequently have to ask, “What does that mean?” or, if I feel like I have used up my allotment of questions, will have to go look something up after the meeting. LOL. So the “dummy” email thing sounds just about my speed.

You can also use Facebook for the Kingdom. I use it to influence friends who do not know the Lord with posts that are spiritually challenging and though provoking. My brother in law is also always posting scripture and of course I frequently post things that are prophetically significant. I’ve been on Facebook now for 8-9 years. I’m not too concerned about the privacy issues. The Lord will protect me and my family and I doubt we are going to be here all that much longer any way. :yahoo:

Oh my goodness!! I am certainly glad that you did not take any offense to that!! LOL as I meant one for incognito, for sure because certainly I am no genius at all when it comes to technology  … but hope that you definitely consider joining the group at FB, we can be the force for good, the force for Jesus!! And Regina, you would certainly be missed too!! You all have greatly contributed to my spiritual growth and well being as well as bringing a big smile to my face. So I am a going to cheer you on until Pentecost or until we are gone whichever comes first! :rose:

    Location, location, location.
    Experience, experience, experience.

I have had experience with two websites that folded and moved to new digs. Eventually, each became not worth the time. My one experience with FB was religious, and developed into an exercise in stupidity. It was not a closed group.
I have prayed about this and have not yet felt led to FB.
    Who knows … maybe it’s a sign.

Well, at least so far, no one has made a convincing argument that setting up a Facebook account is akin to taking the mark of the beast (just using hyperbole solely for the sake of making my point :Hi:, lest anyone misinterpret my comment and unnecessarily take offense).

I do think, IF we are still here, there is the potential for abuse in tracking what we post and tying it back to us for purposes of harassment and persecution. Of course, I’ve already got way too much in the indelible virtual records of cyberspace to escape a conviction from the world’s charges of being a follower of Jesus Christ. That’s a good thing. I think it is a beneficial reality check from time-to-time to look at our own life and try to honestly assess whether there is enough evidence to convict us if we were accused of being a Christian and someone was investigating such a charge.

Anyway, in light of the recent RITAN transition news, seems like many have already either quit the board and/or migrated over to Facebook. Feel a bit like one of the “last of the Mohicans” in a once thriving town that is dying a slow death over the next several weeks. Makes me very sad inside.

You, me and the Lord makes three. I have the same feeling as I did in the military, either when a base would close or I was PCS-ing.

But, I’ve got my short timer’s chain out and I’m counting the days ’til the Rapture (might be nice to know how many days but the sense I get is ‘not long now’).

I’m mean there’s a lot going on prophetically, just it seems as if the world is in a holding pattern (seriously, the economy should be history by now) and all these new leaders are getting elected (anyone notice that?).

Idk, I’ll be here until the place is shuttered. I’ve been praying about where to go too but I haven’t found anything and I’m still not ‘feeling’ the Facebook.

Who knows? Maybe it is a sign in itself… or maybe I’m the oldest fuddy-duddy here at the ripe old age of thirty-something.

    That’s where I am also.

Yes, I’ll be here until the lights go out. With that said I am very grateful to the Good Lord for this site thru the years. I’ve made a lot of like minded friends along the way and I love you each and everyone.

And, whenever the Father dispatches His Beloved Son to go and get us I’ll see ya then.

What a Reunion at Home it will be. I’ll be remembering this wonderful family in my prayers and thoughts and wish you well in the days ahead. Thank you for allowing me the time I spent with you.

Oh, Watchman, this thread has really made me laugh! The comments about dummy email accounts crack me up! Like, email for dummies – that obviously wasn’t the intended meaning, but it’s funny.

I used a computer without a hard drive at work many years ago, and I taught myself how to use MS-DOS, eventually getting a home computer when Windows was invented, eventually learning how to take that computer apart and put it back together, “souping” it up along the way. I was on Compuserve and Prodigy before I ever heard the word “Internet”. I used to save up to buy more memory or a better video card, and was thrilled with each new Windows version. So I considered myself pretty well versed in computer tech. But as the technology became more complicated and powerful, it became too time consuming to continue delving into the mechanics of computing in my effort to personalize my computer. So now I feel like I know less than your average 6th grader about using high tech, and I have probably considered purchasing a book like “Facebook for Dummies”! I don’t even use my cell phone except for emergencies like calling AAA for my car.

I joined Facebook years ago, when I was working at a place with a diverse group of people of various ages and interests. We exchanged Facebook info, and soon I was finding bizarre photos and updates on my page with updates about the lives of total strangers. I’m guessing some of the young people I worked with had many friends, and those had many friends, and so on and so on, and it eventually became overwhelming.

So I don’t remember my password, although I could recover it, I suppose. Or, I could delete that account and set up a new one with a different email. I still haven’t decided. As for privacy, I would certainly take every effort to optimize my privacy, but I hope we all understand that nothing on the internet is totally protected, so we know not to send out personal info that could be read, despite our efforts, by anyone in the world.

So, I just have to decide if I can overlook the format of Facebook. I have found the look and style about RITAN very comfortable. Going to Facebook makes me think about people who go to Las Vegas to get married. I mean, I’m glad they’re getting married and all, but I don’t get the attraction of Vegas. But I do understand the move RITAN is making.

I haven’t chosen what to do yet, but am thankful that my RITAN family will be there to welcome me if I choose to follow.

Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Well I really do not care for Facebook, but I decided to see if I could join and only see the RITAN group. I opened a new free Gmail account that I will only use for RITAN, I joined on Facebook and set all my settings to me only or friends only and if you accept no friends, no problem . At least today my home page is totally blank except for info from RITAN and you can even keep it off your home page also. You can use any name and so far so good. I have never had any social media account anywhere but it does seem you can be totally private. Well its a public group right now so just do not post anything and no problem also. I looked at a few other forums from other Christian groups, I’m sure they are fine but this is my family. I was and still will be on guard , and I will not say there are not a lot of settings you will need to set. I was just not ready to give up this wonderful group of brothers and sisters. Everyone needs to pray and make up your own mind, and pray seeking the Lords will. Not trying to influence anyone just telling you what I have done and encountered. I know there is no real privacy anymore, however I do not care who knows I’m a Christian. It will take a little time to figure out who is who at first but lots of familiar voices posted. So I’m not really seeing anything that will be a problem for me, and I hope no one else does. From what I have seen I would guess if privacy is a real concern and you already had a account there I would open a new account with another name and then it seems you can have even a different user name. It only took a few minutes to open a new Gmail giving the least amount of info, and a separate email just for Facebook sounded like a good idea just as a added step. Hope this may help answer some questions and I’m sure there are friends here that can give exact advice about all the settings.
Well to those who are undecided maybe get hold of one of the Mods and get more info. I still do not really like a social media site, I agree with a lot of the points that have been made here. RITAN and wonderful ones here that have cared and prayed for me for years were just to important in my life to not give it a try. If anything happens I feel you would like to know before this site closes down I will be glad to let you know anything I see about Facebook.
And I guess you can delete the account but I have heard it takes a little time for the account to really close out.

    Love in Christ
    Your brother

Blake, I want to thank you specifically for that post.
I am starting to get a little babbley over this FB thing.
Bottom line is that this may be all silliness, because it is possible the Rapture may occur before the FB date!
Yesterday I wasted my time trying to see if my old FB account would be acceptable to use for the new RITAN group. It was not! That account was set up as an outreach on an open FB that brought me into contact with more unsaved and unsavory people than I could have imagined.
It took ALOT of trouble to delete that old FB account, and it won’t be completed till 2 weeks pass.
So yes, it is possible that I may set up a new account. But it probably won’t be before the move.
