Did you know that there are principles in God’s Word that show us how to judge any prophecy? Did you know that all prophecy is NOT from God?
We are told to “test” the spirits. Why is that? Well, its because prophetic words can come from God, our own thoughts or from Satan and His fallen demonic angels. 1st John 4:1 “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
When truth is denied, deception is released. There are many false claims and prophecies in the world today that come from hidden agendas using manipulation of fear, shame and control to deceive their listeners. Sadly, many times these false words come from those who are truly born again but following their fleshly desires to feel important or accepted. How can we rightly judge a “word” of prophecy and know if it is from God? Would you like to know?
The following are nine (9) principles found in Gods Word on how to understand the Who, What, Where,When,How and Why of prophecy. I have excerpted the outline and many of the statements with it from the series called “top 20 questions” found in the front of my Prophecy Study Bible copyrighted 1997 by John C. Hagee. I have also added some of my thoughts and findings in the narrative.
The purpose of New Testament prophecy is to edify, exhort and comfort. 1st Cor 14:3
The word EDIFY means to build up or strengthen; the word EXHORT means to encourage; and the word COMFORT means just that. When anyone speaks a message into your life of fear or condemnation, it is NOT from God. This is true for any claim another person makes to you whether they claim to be a prophet, pastor, teacher or messenger of God or not.
Remember, WORDS are the most powerful tool of all creation. God used WORDS alone to create everything, both visible and invisible. That is why we need to be careful with the words we speak…they can have powerful and everlasting consequences.
Prophecy agrees with the Word of God
All true prophecy comes from the Holy Spirit, who is the author of the Word of God. Therefore, all prophecy will agree in fact and in spirit with the Word of God. Any utterance that does not agree with the Word of God is a FALSE PROPHECY. Did you get that? I’ll say it again. ALL words spoken as a claim to what is going to happen that does not agree with the revealed and written Word of God is a WORD OF PROPHECY. Think about that!
And, this leads us into the next principle which is…..
Any prophecy that comes true but does not give glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ comes from a Spirit of Divination.
The fact that a prophecy comes true is not proof that it comes from God. Deut. 13:1-3
If a prophecy comes true and promotes disobedience against God or His Word, it is not a true prophecy. Deut. 13:1-3
“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘lets go after other gods which you have not known, and let us serve them’. you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams”
Notice here that this is not talking about a FALSE prophet or dreamer of dreams, but is talking about what that prophet or dreamer had to say. IE his WORDS. Moses clearly states that just because a sign or wonder of the prophecy comes true does not mean the prophet spoke the Word of the Lord. In the case of leading his listeners into idolatry, the prophets of Israel that did such were put to death. And so, we are warned to Test the Spirits, so we will not be lead away from Gods Word. Even if an “angel of light” come to us and gives us a “word from the Lord”, if it does not square with the revealed Word, we must reject it outright and command that “angel of light” to leave and be silent in Jesus name.
True prophecy produces freedom and not bondage.
Any form of control over another person by intimidation, manipulation or domination is witchcraft. False prophecy will always eventually lead to witchcraft. Don’t get hooked on anyone but Jesus.
2Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Rom 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father”
Prophecy must bear fruit and agree with the Holy Spirit in conduct and character
Any form of joy or peace that bypasses righteousness is a demonic spirit of religion. A man who prophecies but does not pay his bills is a false prophet. A person who prophecies but lives in immorality or financial irresponsibility is in deep deception and is a false prophet.
Prophecy must agree with the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22,23 If prophecy in the Church age is without love, joy and peace, it is not from God.
False prophets do not come down the street screaming obscene slogans. They come as wolves in sheep’s clothing. Mt. 7:15,16
They look fine, they talk fine and the first thing they say is not to judge them. OK, so don’t judge them…….just inspect their fruit. Hee Hee.
If a prophecy contains predictions that do not come true, the prophecy was false
Deut. 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken presumptuously.
So, we then see that there can be a true prophet of the Lord who has and will speak true words from God, but we still need to test them because he still my be speaking in his own strength and weakness of flesh from time to time. As long as this prophet is not trying to lead us away from worshiping God, he can still be used of God. But, we still need to test each time to see if his words pass the test of squaring with the written Word of God.
True prophecy injects fresh life into the meeting of believers
I really like this principle. The Bible says that the “letter” kills but the Spirit gives ‘life”. True prophecy from the Holy Spirit brings spiritual life to the meeting of believers. If a prophecy is given that destroys the worship and puts us back under the law, that prophecy is not from God. 2Cor 3:6
True prophecy given by the Holy Spirit will bear witness with your spirit
1 John 5:6b This is the only principle which is not objectively understood but is subjectively felt within our being. Since who we really are is a spirit being living temporarily inside an earth suit, we have the ability to “know” something outside the realm of the temporal. This is just such an instance. God designed us with feelings and emotions for just such cases.
So, in conclusion, we know that Jesus said the number one sign of the end of the age will be deception. It is therefore very important to know how to “judge” the “spirit” of any word of prophecy or knowledge or prediction by the principles given from God’s Handbook. May you be abundantly blessed as you continue to watch and be washed by the truth of God’s Word.
